How can I help a student who has reading problems in the areas of fluency and word tracking?

rocket reader

Hi,
I have a student whose comprehension is suffering due to her problems generalizing words by their first letters (his for her), skipping words, lines, adding her own words, and not focusing on conjunctions that can therefore change meaning. I tried reading trackers, using her fingers, a pen to underline each word, but she is choppy and continues to have these problems. Her comprehension is suffering greatly. Has anyone tried Rocket Reader or any other computer programs? Thanks so much. Any recommendations re: materials or manipulatives that have worked well would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Without knowing the child’s age it’s impossible to know for sure, but what you describe sounds more like a true mental disability rather than a learning problem. No amount of instruction is going to make her track words properly. Have her tested.

One of the blogs I read is written by a homeschooling mom that has eye tracking problemsl, maybe that is the sort of issue the student you mention is having? Here is a link to the posts on her blog about this issue, she has some ideas that might help your student.
