can anybody discuss the proposed cigarette tax without bias?

rocket reader

i’m talking the cigarette taxes….iowa just raised taxes 1.00 a pack and the feds are considering a 61 cent increase….lets not talk pros and cons of smoking….lets just talk about the tax in general….all the polls conducted in iowa and nationwide are about the same….70-75% of people favor increasing the taxes…well it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see who that mainly is…that is the number of non smokers in america…as more smokers quit and less young people start, don’t you see what will happen?..that gravey train will dry up…then who will they tax…maybe another 1.00 per gallojn of gas eh?….what i’m getting at is this…i believe all americans, no matter their stand on smoking, should fight against any tax increase on any portion of their society, especially such drastic increases….our country was made by people opposing taxes…all taxes!…all americans need to stand together on these issues…who will be next?…drivers?, readers?, drinkers?..meat eaters?

Gee. You sound very bias to me. But if they tax anything it should be Alcohol. A smoker driving is safer than a drunk driver. How can people afford to smoke?

First, gotta tell you about a Nebraska smoker who told me people from other states were actually buying smokes in Iowa because prices were lower, so Iowa raised taxes to make more money on their booming business and other states were also complaining losing revenue to Iowa. Guess an Iowan will have to confirm this.
And then what you bring up is sooo true. I’d like to know what the non-smokers will do when smoker numbers drop and so does their revenue. What’s so great is supposedly places here in Nebraska, i.e. the Devaney Center, are built with the revenues from cigarette tax and then no smoking is allowed anywhere near these places. Ironic, isn’t it? We should be thanking the smokers for all their money! This smoking issue is becoming another ‘Big Brother is watching’! And like you said, WHO is next? There will be someone else always targetted, that’s for sure. Unity is truly the key; not dictatorship of our rights and freedoms the United States is supposed to be based on. Then ignore the real issues, like releasing child molestors KNOWING they are sure to be repeat offenders…oh, boy, don’t get me started!

Taxing is seen as a possible deterrent to beginning to smoke. Those already hooked wont be deterred.
